Little Elm is generally located along the northern and eastern shores of Lewisville Lake at the cross roads of Eldorado Parkway and FM 423 and includes stretches of U.S. Highway 380. Its neighbors include Frisco to the east, The Colony and Hackberry to the south, Prosper, Aubrey, and Providence to the north, and Oak Point, Cross Roads, and Lakewood Village to the west.
The Peters Colony and Little Elm were chartered in 1841 as part of the Republic of Texas. The area was inhabited mostly by Indian tribes who lived along the several creeks that traversed the area, providing abundant water for springs and associated wildlife for food. As settlers discovered, the area also had a rich source of timber, which provided fuel in the harsh winters and fertile soil for crops.
Little Elm remained a quiet lakeside community until growth by surrounding communities began to have a profound effect on our sleepy town. As growth discovered Little Elm in the late 1990s, residents began to prepare for the flood of new residents that were learning about our beautiful lake setting that had been enjoyed so much by a small number of the local residents for decades.
Little Elm was incorporated in June 1966; adopted the council / manager form of government and its Home Rule Charter in May 2001; and currently has approximately 9,012 acres or 14.08 square miles within its corporate limits. Little Elm has more miles of shoreline (66 miles) than any city in DFW. Lakeside amenities off Eldorado Parkway include a cable wake board park, a boat ramp, a massive swim beach, a marina, an amphitheater on the water, and many miles of trail. Other park attractions include the disc golf course at McCord Park on FM 423. A diverse housing mix includes estate residential custom homes, traditional single-family housing, townhouses, duplexes, multi-family, and manufactured homes.
Little Elm High School is a 4-A high school located north of Dallas, Texas on the banks of Lewisville Lake. Little Elm was one of the fasted growing towns in the country between the years of 2000 and 2010. The high school has seen growth associated with the growth of the town. With a little over 5,000 residents in 2000, Little Elm population was a little over 29,000 by 2013.
